Mustang Region Trek
Mustang region trekking is one of the wilderness and restricted trekking destination in Nepal. The word Mustang came from Tibetan word Mun; which means fertile land in Tibetan is the former kingdom of Lo. Today Mustang is in Nepal near to the border of China. Mustang is a place which has preserved the ancient traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture. People in Mustang mostly depend on animal husbandry raring cattle like yak and sheep however now a days most of them are attracted to Tourism. In mustang those Tibetan people who had survived Chinese invasion in 1951 live. Although the place was annexed to Nepal at 18th century mustang’s monarchy was officially ceased by the order of Government of Nepal on 7th October 2008. Lo Manthang, a walled city which was the capital of Mustang is one of the greatest attraction of the place as its appearance date back to 13th century when warrior Ame Pal founded the Buddhist kingdom. Mustang falls on the rain shadow side of Annapurna himal range and Dhaulagiri which makes it dry and arid. Trekking in Mustang was officially opened in 1992 for foreigners and since then only limited number of trekkers gets to visit the place.
Mustang region trekking starts from Jomsom after you take a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Pokhara to Jomsom. The trekking trail follows the trail which ones served as the trade between Nepal and Tibet. En route you will pass through chortens, prayer wheel, monasteries, beautiful fields of Barley, beautiful villages with colourful painted mud-brick houses, Yak caravan passing by, . You will explore through striking terrains of semi- arid deserts, deep gorges, rocky outcrops fringed by snow, snowy peaks and many more. On the backdrop lies majestic Himalayan Mountains Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Tukuce and Nilgiri. Another major attraction of the place is Tiji festival which is also known as “The Chasing of the Demons” is held for three days where people all over mustang gather in Lo mathang to celebrate the festival. During this festival monk are dressed in elaborate costumes and masks and perform rituals and dance which is supposed to chase away evil spirits.
